    Having just signed in again having researched and drafted the post below, I see it crosses with Bill Morris.  I post it anyway, because it is slightly different.

     Bingo!  There were such things as sextant binoculars http://www.fleaglass.com/ads/sextant-binoculars/ . Plath supplied a skinny frame model with them http://www.la-timonerie-antiquites.com/en/antique/442/large-sextant-german-c-plath-hamburg , but how did the Plath binoculars screw in? They don’t appear to have any way of being attached to the sextant.  The double eyepiece ring might be a clue.  Unscrew the focussing wheel completely push one eyepiece through the rings and reassemble.  I suppose it’s worth a try.  Dave
