While following up Brad's suggestion to decode Gunter Rule scales with early 19th century Bowditch references, I find Bowditch mentions "Rule of Three".
Stan Klein found one definition on the internet - "a method of finding a number in the same ratio to a given number as exists between two other given numbers". Although mentioned in various Bowdith editions, it's never explained what the rule is or how it's used. It seems to be a proportion, perhaps a way of scaling geometric relationships.
Does anyone know?
