    It should be possible to use an optical rev counter to get an idea of the working speed of the rotor. If I can get to it I will do a test and list my findings.

    On the subject of Gyro sextants there was at least one version of a gyro sextant that was used in RN Submarines via the periscope. I don't think the Russians had or used a gyro sextant. Their bubble sextant is a copy of the Plath instrument. Possibly even made on captured WWII German machinery. I have one of each and some parts are identical.
