Thanks for the response to my posting.

I did not use HO 203 0r 204 at sea. As a matter of fact i never saw a copy thereof aboard an American Ship, Merchant Marine or Navy - my only prior exposure to thrse pubs had been through classroom work which utilized the 1934 edition of Dutton as a textbook. The sights posted were reworked from those originally done utilizing HO 214 and the Air Almanac.

Thanks also for the attached corrections, additions and errata, however, none seem to correct the errors I spoke of, nor do they mitigate the lengthy and overly technical explanation of usage - I believe that had these tables been published utilizing d/m/s and broken up into a number of volumes, as was later done with HO 214, they would have found far greater acceptance.

On the subject of short tabular methods generally - there have been so many produced hat it is difficult to provide an all inclusive list; Not counting the various Lunar Distance tabular methods, I believe the following at l east may have been missed.

Longitude by Chronometer, 1849 -by James Gordon

Altitude, Azimuth & LOP, 1918 - USHO

Altitude & Azmuth Tables for LOP about 1914, by Radler de Aquino, BN

Altitude tables, 1907, by Frederick Ball

etc, etc

There is an errata insert pasted into my 1923 HO203 volume which clearly corrects the errors found in the explanation (or to use the 1800's term...explication) of the tables. I've attached the front piece of that insert, dated 1924. So the errors were found quickly, within a year of first issue.

The 1933 HO204 contains no such errata.

There is yet another paper glued into the 1923 volume, "Additional Uses of HO 203", to wit: Star Identification as well as Determination of Morning and Evening Twilight. Attached.

Specifically referenced in the production of HO203 are the following works

(1) Abrégé de Navigation, historique, théoretique, et pratique.... Jerome Lalande. Paris 1793
(2) Horary tables for finding the time by inspection, to facilitate the operations for obtaining the longitude at sea, by chronometers and lunar observations... Thomas Lynn. London 1827
(3) Azimuth tables showing the true bearing of the sun... Thomas Lynn. London 1829.
