Thanks. I had wondered if it was an error.
I agree that quoting the url is the correct way of referring to the message. I was distracted because as a long time yahoo groups member (at least until yahoo destroyed the groups) I am used to referring to messages by number but could not find one. It is obvious now - the number is in the url!
