Hello Gary,
I am updating my Canadian book "Celestial Navigation using the Sight Reduction Tables Pub No. 249" (published in 2014 and still selling well), and would like to add a problem (after the Example) to help the students practice the use of Volume 1 to pre-determine what three stars would be best. Unfortunately, all my original work was based on the manuals for 2003, including Vol. 1, which I gave away some five years ago to a local sailing school whose owner was an Swiss engineer, had a fascination for Celestial Nav, and offered regular classes using my various navigation books. Ownership changed; the new owner has no interest in Celestial Navigation and threw away all my books and manuals. And I can't find Vol. 1 for the 2000 Epoch (which includes 2003) anywhere on the web. I did find a copy but the scan is of low resolution so I can't reproduce a page.
In searching frantically, I came across you message saying "I have it and scan it in" (July 16). I don't know to whom you were writing, but suspect it was John Pinto, a delightful American amateur astronomer cum mathematician who has volunteered to help me out with this update (I am 82 and can, indeed, use all the help I can get).
All this to say that, if you do have Vol 1 for the 2000 Epoch and a scanner, I would be eternally grateful if you could send me a scan, in 300 dpi or more, of p. 122 (Lat 19 degrees N, LHA Gamma 0-90 degrees). That would allow me to prepare an exercise using the same numbers but a different method (i.e. Vol 1) to select stars.
I thank you in advance.
Best regards,
