Stephen, you’ve bumped into one of the limitations of Pub 249. Try experimenting with other sight reduction methods that don’t require the use of an assumed position. Instead, they calculate the intercept from a position of your choosing, such as a dead reckoning position. I prefer the method found in Norie’s Nautical Tables as I enjoy flipping through the log tables. Other methods work just as well or better. You also won’t be limited by latitude and can use any of the navigational stars visible, rather than the limited listing provided in Pub 249.
