A few days ago I determined an azimuth by the Hanno Ix graph and it did not occur to me to check the rules for naming the azimuth. I should have done - each table/graph is different. For example Burdwood contains the instruction
In South lat when apparant time is AM read azimuth from South to East
when apparant time is AM read azimuth from South to West
which can be written as name azimuth from the elevated pole and HA.
Contrast this with the ABC tables. Yesterday by coincidence I calculated an azimuth by these tables and the rule was non-elevated pole and HA. I am in south lat so the azimuth was N nnn HA.
Another option is in HO 229 where the instruction is
In South lat LHA > 180 Zn=180-Z
LHA < 180 Zn =180 +Z
I do not know the answer to Brian's question but I think that the above shows that his question is not trivial. Some time ago I remember posting in a thread on the subject of azimuth. I will try and locate the thread.
