An excerpt from Harry Pidgeon's book "Around The World Single-Handed" has him describing the difficulties of using navigation tables underway on a crossing from California to Hawaii. To deal with his seasickness tendencies he chose to stay on deck and estimate the time of local apparent noon (LAN) to get longitude. Equal altitudes of the Sun would have gotten him a better longitude yet still keeping him on deck. Perhaps he could have performed a time sight reduction by breaking up the reduction into multiple sessions with breaks for above deck air and horizon gazing.
