Dear Brian,
I made a copy of Bris Sextant - also from a #10 welding glass and microscope slides.
The lack of reflections you notice is most probably because of the grease film on the surfaces. Just wash the instrument properly and let it dry.
My opinion on the original design - it is far too small, I could not use it because of the huge light "pollution" from the sides. I had to make the bit of welding glass much wider (that on the picture).
