Has anyone made a Bris sextant - what kind of glass did you use?

I just tried to make a Bris sextant with a piece of #12 welding glass and two glass slide pieces. It had many defects caused by my inability to cut the glass cleanly (especially the welding glass - that stuff is tough!), but the main problem was that I only saw one 'sun' - no reflections when I held it up. Any thoughts on the materials? Other tips?
