Report No 198, Astronomical Methods in Aerial Navigation, published in 1928, an excerpt is attached, gives formulae most similar to those used in recent posts on long-hand sight reduction using haversine methods, and partly attributed to Doniol. It also strongly suggests that these formulae were used, or even derived, by d'Ocagne in 1899 to produce his nomogram which solves the astronomical triangle.
d'Ocagne and Doniol were both French, and frequented Cherbourg.
