From volume 2 of the Admiralty Navigation Manual, 1938, page 246
"The advantages (as noted by Hanno) also apply to the versine, but the haversine is preferable because its limiting values 0 and 1, make the construction of logearithmic and other tables comparatively simple, whereas the limiting values of the versine, 0 and 2, do not."
