Matthew's post gave a method for reducing a time sight without multiplication. Maybe I should try his method. I have nearly finished determining my position by two time sights, Martelli's tables and a two point Sumner. Greg confused the situation by mentioning the Haversine Doniol method. That reminded me that I was part way through learning the Doniol-Rudzinski-Ix method. I had stopped work when I discovered that a long multiplication of two numbers < 1 was required. I am sure that I can remember how to long multiply two numbers >1 but will probably be confused if they are < 1.
From the 1950s we have:
Doniol haversine
Sadler's modification of Ageton
Doniol-Rudzinski-Ix
and now Mattew.
Are there any other "new" methods? What would Lecky have thought?
