On this same subject, I remeber some years ago Gary Lapook was going to do nav on a passenger cruise he was undertaking and there was a discussion about finding height of eye without acces to the ships schematics. Ideas ranged from dropping a plum bob to the waterline to simply asking the officers if they knew the height of deck. It occured to me that laser rangfinders are now cheap and plentiful. Has anyone ever tried looking over the rail of a ship and lasing the water to check height of eye? Obvioulsy this will only work if you hace access to a deck with rails but it seems a fast and easy way to achive accurate height of eye.
