It turns out I can see Joel's photos better than I thought I could.
I think I did a fair job of transcribing the instructions, though I was not
able to
translate every single word.  I have not found my French-English dictionary
yet.
It is not in any of the boxes I have searched so far!

Since I cannot see the bevel (or is it a mark?) or the table stuck to the
bottom of the box, I am not sure if this is sufficient to puzzle out how to
use all of its features.  I did not understand anything about distance off.

        I will attempt a translation of the directions that come with the
compass.
        My French is pretty rusty.  I will be using freetranslation.com, and
I will
        be searching for my old French-English dictionary.  The older, the

        in this case, I imagine.

        I have already sent Joel the following translation of the final
paragraph on PENTE.
        I cannot make out every single word because of the curves and marks
on the page
        and the resolution of the photo.   But I am hoping I will be able to
make out
        (and translate!) the important ones.

                SLOPE
        Place the marked side of the box
        on the line (??,??,??, etc.) of which
        you want to have the inclination, the vertical limb.
        Read the angle of slope directly on the limb,
        and from it deduct the slope in ?hundredths? at
        the middle of the table.

                Thanks for your input Bill,

                I tried that, but there is noway to freeze the pendulum to
take an accurate reading of what it points to on the scale after you have
sighted the angle. Also the device doesn't seem to have an up or down
indication and there are scales on both sides of the rose.
