    Lee,

The winter solstice is in a few days which is when the Sun is at the lowest altitude at local apparent noon (LAN). The Sun's altitude is about 35° above the horizon for Alabama right now at meridian passage. Double this to 70° for the approximate altitude observed in the artificial horizon at LAN. The Davis sextant measures to 120° so you have 50° to spare. You are good to go until spring.

I am located in north Alabama, so even this time of year the sun would still be too high to get a noon shot with the ah. Is there any other way to accomplish this without a large body of water.
