Help needed for partial reference

I have been reading a paper from the Geographical Journal in 1934, where Ralph Bagnold describes the navigation methods he employed during his expeditions into the unknown Sahara desert in 1929 and 1930. The principal instrument for celestial navigation was the theodolite, which was used primarily for sightings on stars. (Noon sightings on the sun were a "waste of valuable driving time.") He states that, "The computations were done by the usual simple formula on p.218 of 'Hints'." There is no reference for "Hints", which I assume is not the full title of the book. I would be grateful if someone would give me a full title (and author) and possibly also say what the formulae are.
