Thankyou Frank, that moves me usefully along the road. I am most grateful. Some more searching on Google turns up Vol. 1, "Surveying and Practical Astronomy" of "Hints to Travellers", edited for the Council of the Royal Geographical Society by John Coles and published in 1901. This is most probably the volume to which Bagnold referred.
