Yes, old school heroes.....They all seem to have been ex army...
Not all ex-army. Both Shackleton and Frank Worsley (a second generation Kiwi) were Merchant Navy officers, eventually becoming Master Mariners. Shackleton probably did have the kind of education you describe - an example of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Life would also have been hard in their early seagoing experiences in square riggers.
