curiosity got the better of me - I carefully unscrewed and removed the perspex cover to look at the certificate, and found there were two older ones behind it dated 1954 and 1939!
The sextant D.242 shown online at https://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/43431.html is almost identical, that page says it was made in 1934..... another article online https://sextantbook.com/2009/01/03/evolution-of-the-sextant-micrometer/ states
"In the early thirties, Heath and Co, by now merged with W F Stanley and Co., made the logical step of increasing the pitch of the rack and adding a micrometer drum".
So, it would appear my sextant D.429 was probably made between 1934 and 1939. Very impressed!
