Hi Murray,
I looked that up and found the pdf. I started to link it but it's too long.
I'm obviously not the expert but I wonder about the article. It seems to me that the writer says "That obviously can't be correct." He also states that "It appears unquestionable to me that geodetic operations are in no way sensibly affected by mountain attraction." He then proceeds to write endless equations to prove on paper what he assumed. I agree with you that I'll stick with the children's version.
