I recommend Lecky's Wrinkles in practical navigation - S.T.S.Lecky available online. My 1917 edition discusses the "establishment" of ports. From this and a knowledge of the phase of the Moon it is possible to calculate the tidal prediction, albeit not to today's precision. Either in that edition or an earlier one there is discussion of the "Edact" which is required to calculate both the date of Easter and the Moon phase - I found it hard to get right. The book is a delightful read and one of the many treasures I've discovered through navlist.
Have fun
