Of course! I'm kicking myself that I didn't include it in my reading
list. It's a magnificent book, with superb photos of instruments,
including many unusual ones, mostly from the author's own collection,
which he has passed on to the Mariners Museum at Newport News.

Peter Ifland is a longstanding member of the nav-l list, and an
occasional contributor.

His book is mainly an account of the instruments that were observed
with, avoiding mathematical detail about the navigation itself, but
the descriptions of the observations are clear and correct. Guy could
not have done better. There is also plenty for those interested in air
navigation, and lots of stuff, not to be found elsewhere, about
artificial horizons and rangefinders.

Another book, that I keep on advocating, on a more specialised topic
is "The Quest for Longitude", ed.William J H Andrewes, Harvard 1996. A
big book and an expensive one, it's the proceedings of a conference,
but a much better read than conference proceedings usually are. If
you're interested in the history of timekeeping at sea, this is for
you. Also some stuff on lunars, but much less than on watches.
