Marcel,
If you look at the base of the ships stern you will see an inverted false image of the lower stern and part of the ship's name where the rudder post should be seen. Below the APL letters at mid ship is also a noticeable inverse image. The false image caused by air density differences is what I think of as a mirage.

Just a short note. I am at the moment very busy finishing a work. You mention the photo being a "mirage". I am not able to see a mirage at all. We are again back on the taxonomy of refraction phenomenons. Here is a description of some refractional phenomenons http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/mirages/mirsims/loom/loom.html which could be related to your photo. Was it may be "looming"?
