That is an extraordinary case! An occupational hazard in the steel making industry is blindness due to IR from the molten steel.
Medicine in UK has recently been held back by a naive unrealistic belief in "evidence based" medicine. I.e. if you do not have the absolute proof,with perfect science (and what is that? )do nothing.This is rubbish and kills people.
I am increasingly shocked - and concerned - that most articles in the medical journals seem to have very little grounding in rigorous
scientific method. In particular, there seems to be a very poor grasp of statistics and the limits of validity of statistical results. But as Western medicine is dedicated to treating symptoms rather than finding cures, I suppose this is to be expected.
