Horizontal Angles while Kayaking

David Burch discusses some very interesting piloting techniques in his book Kayak Navigation (page 136). It seems that for the average person that an image shifts 6° when observing with one eye then shifting to the other. This is known to kayakers as winking. The formula used is (10)(horizontal distance in nautical miles) = Distance off in nautical miles. This is a simplified version of the formula (60)(horizontal distance in nautical miles) / observed horizontal angle in degrees = Distance off in nautical miles. The latter formula can be used with a kayak paddle kamal. Lucky for me at arms length 1° = 1 cm making a paddle scale easy to make using a tape measure (see images).
