    Re: Hornblower movies

The A&E movies were called "Young Hornblower," about Hornblower's life
as a junior lieutenant.  They were quite good.   The only other
Hornblower movie ever made was an adaptation of the very first
Hornblower novel in which Hornblower was a full captain on a challenging
mission off the coast of South America.  This was the novel that
launched CS Forester to success as the Patrick O'Brian of the 1950s
(Forester then penned additional Hornblower works taking him all the way
from lieutenant to admiral).  The latter movie starred Gregory Peck and
Virginia Mayo.   I haven't seen it in years, but as I recollect it's a
pretty good adaptation of the novel judged by 1950s Hollywood standards
(eg, the shipboard life scenes were good, but nowhere near as good as
    those in Master and Commander).

Side note:  I fell in love with Hornblower in high school.   Drove my
English teacher absolutely nuts -- every time we had to read a novel and
write a book report I chose one of the Hornblower novels.   He finally
asked if I ever read anything "important."  I looked at him sweetly and
    said "no."
