Globes are still made that way today. Around 2009, the Tobias Mayer Verein / Museum in Marbach, Germany sponsored the reconstruction of Tobias Mayer's globe of the Moon from the extant copper plates of the gores. Günther Oestmann und Felix Lühning created some two douzen copies. I wonder whether any of them ever made it to any museum or library in the US.
