Re: How best to pronounce Eratosthenes?
    From: Rommel John Miller

    Friends,

This is off topic, but I think bears saying and explaining since someone mentioned it, Frank, please post this and forgive my staying off topic.

Both the Name Aristophanes and Eratosthenes mean a great deal to me as my degree is in philosophy and as a graduate student I prided myself in the ability to translate and read ancient Greek aloud during student teaching exploits.

So forgive my hubris as I weigh in on the matter.

Aristophanes was the poet and playwright of Ancient Greece, the Birds being his best work and oft adapted.

I taught my students to pronounce it thusly:

    Ari-stof-fen-knees

Now, we philosophers love math too, and so the great mathematician and geometrist Eratosthenes plays a huge role in graduate Philosophical studies.  After all, Wittgenstein was a philosopher who left Oxford to study math at Cambridge when he declared that he had reached the limit of his involvement with philosophy.

What Witty lost and failed to realized is that our beloved Ph. D. is nothing more than a Doctor of Philosophy in a given field of study.

Philo Sophenes is the love of knowledge, and nothing more.

With that out of the way, allow me to suggest this humble key for pronouncing the great Mathematician/Philosopher’s name:

    Air-rath-o-knees

    Or

    Err-rath-o-knees

    Rath and in George Rath

Err or Air as in their English pronunciation

O as in Oh say can you see?

And knees as in something we will all need to have replaced when we get older.  (Cortisone is only momentary for relieving pain.)

IMHO what our joints need are zerk fittings where we can replenish the lost fluids like to lube joints and journal bearings.

Completely off topic but I hope Frank will still post this as I think I am able to help.
