Robert,
I agree, you need the moon (altitude or preferably LDs) to get time, or the Jupiter moons( not very practical at sea) or known position and work backwards.
I've tried all these. Jupiter moons very difficult on land with a good telescope. At sea, well Galileo and many since tried and failed. I am thinking maybe a modern cam stabiliser?
I find proper LDs much easier and more accurate than the altitude method. The maths are actually easy with my slide rule or calculator.
For me, lunars every time.
