I wrote yesterday:
" I found that Uranus is less than a degree from Mars tonight. If you have clear skies and a small telescope, this is a great opportunity to find the "planet formerly known as George"."
Well, I did a little backyard observing last night with my old six-inch Newtonian reflector. Venus was huge; Mars tiny; and old George was just a dot (not a point, definitely a planet, but I wouldn't have noticed if I didn't know the location). Spent a while outside despite the cold and looked at the Andromeda Galaxy, Orion Nebula, the Pleiades, plus the rich open clusters M35 and M38, all without star charts. :)
