Tony,
If you really want to show off on emergency navigation then buy or make a Bris sextant (search Bris in archives). Use the Pub 249 one page long term almanac for Sun data (PDF attached). Time /reduce by Casio calculator watch and natural trig tables. Plot on a pilot chart with small Douglas style protractor.

Thanks for the formulas. As I expected - it is a try-and-error process with several inter-dependent variables.
If I had a time machine - I'd certainly pay a visit to Mr Claudius Ptolemy with my FREIBERGER, Casio fx-85ES Plus and a watch I recently found on a flee-market. :)
Regarding the SR/SS-tables: apart from the Calcutainment™ I hope to practice all sorts of emergency navigation as a lesson during a normal non-emergency yachting vacations. A friend of mine is a captain on a hire yacht, he is interested in my navigation studying.
Warm regards,
Tony
