What is even more interesting is that in the 50's Jack Volder who developed the method and coined the term CORDIC, was motivated to do so to come up with faster ways of performing calculations for what?
That which is near and dear to our hearts, navigation or course!

Fascinating Vladimir. I see from the bibliography of the wikipedia article that you are quite an expert on these calculations! Did you write some portions of the wikipedia article? It's very good.
