Flying with the stick between your knees or with rudder is an acquired art, and the twin reflection principle of the marine sextant is relatively tilt proof, or so my science teacher liked to have us prove, but what about lookout? It’s unlikely that FC would have met another aeroplane half way across the Tasman Sea, but these days in the USA and in Europe you need eyes in the back of your head, and even then you miss some. It would be very unwise a for solo airman to stop looking out for long unless under close air traffic surveilance.
