Gentlemen,
I believe we don't have full agreement of what constitutes the Chichester test.
My understanding so far has been that ALL calculations are assumed to be done
in flight - just as Chichester and glp did, at least partially.
The question if there is a better / wiser procedure such as pre-calculation seems
to be a different one.
This is my sentiment:
If I were a pilot I certainly would like to have a practical method that allows to make all
calculations in flight as a back-up. Since Greg did not make calculations in flight his
use of havDoniol for his flight does obviously not confirm tor deny the practicality of
havDoniol in this strict definition of the Chichester test.
In this sense the question remains open.
Your opinions?

Hanno,Hv Doniol passes the Chichester test by doing the Hp and azimuth precalculations the day before so that all that is done during the flight are octant observations that are directly compared to Hp for an intercept. The plot goes down on the chart immediately. No inflight sight reduction calculating. Other methods of reduction can be used the same way to pass the Chichester test. Doing inflight sight reduction and flying a plane without an autopilot at the same time seems impossible but this is what Chichester did with the Bygrave over 80 years ago.Greg RudzinskiFrom: Hanno Ix
Date: 2014 Dec 1, 17:13 -0800Greg,Thanks for those Hx - much more than I expected. You did not make those calculations / drawings during flight, did you?If you did, Does your exercise demonstrate the havDoniol is practical during flight?Did you do the calculations by hand? What changes would you make now that you have this experience ?Would you have preferred Bygrave or not?In other words, do you think the havDoniol passes the Chichester test?H
