hello Craig
if i was you i would take an old screwdriver cut a gap in it to the right width and ease nut out.i dont know what those "nuts"are called and better tool places might have such screwdriver/s it is easy enough to make one.or you can try inserting two small screwdrivers in a slot and holding tops together use another in between to turn the nut.
