Peter,
I have had very good luck with a laser bump 1st surface mirror floated on syrofoam cut to fit the Davis artificial horizon. The artificial horizon is positioned on a lazy susan so that a pair of observations can be made, The pair times and altitudes are averaged then one sight reduction is performed. No calibrations or leveling is needed. Errors are equal and opposite. After hundreds of sights so far results have shown to have intercepts of 1' minute of arc or better 90 percent of the time.
