David,
I have found shortwaves useful for time ticks (not always wwv) and BBC news. They don't work inside the cabin so will require a trip on deck or to the bridge wing. Check out the Tecsun PL-660. Binoculars are just nice to have along but optional. The stopwatch is very handy when doing stars at twilight to preserve time. Plotting sheets are easy to make or just photo copy a batch for your trip. There are PDFs of several types on the internet. Pilot charts can be had used on Ebay and are great for plotting the ships track and noon positions (see link).
