The fens... Being located at the southren end of the Fens, Cambridge has its own very special weather... ground fog thick enough to cut with a knife. On still winter days, a damp so cold that even though the temp was still hovering around 0 celsius, it utterly cut to the bone. When conditions were right even the river Cam would flood its banks and fill the backs behind the colleges. Starving grad student that I was, I had an ancient hand-me-down bicycle that probably had been sold down through decades of students. It had pantograph brakes which barely worked... I vividly remember one morning rounding the corner above Silver St to discover the bike path completely submerged where it descended onto the backs. And because it was drizzling and my brakes were performing even worse than usual, I ended up to my waist in the cold water before I was able to come to a stop...
