Out of curiosity how is the email format "fragile". Seems to me email is one of the more durable internet systems.
That said I generally prefer using a traditional message board format (such as https://forum.woodenboat.com/).
And while I am unlikely to ever download such an app (I try to keep the apps to a minimum), creating ways to engage that might bring in new people is certainly worthwhile. I do have a few broad suggestions:
-Make it as efficient with data as possible, lots of people have limited data, slow internet connections, or a temporary weak signal. So many apps do not take this in to account.
-Make sure it woks off line. Exactly how much it saves locally and haw that behaves should be controllable through settings.
-The ability to save favourite massages.
-Make sure it is 100% good to go before putting it out in the world. So many (vary large) organizations seem to put out software out before it is actually finished and ready for prime time.
