"An important Cold War epoch device, called Naklonomer in Russian
(dip-meter, in English, usually encoded as "tiltmeter" in Russian
documents, for secrecy:-) finally
crossed the Iron Curtain!
This smuggling operation was organized by a turncoat agent
(nickname "A-x");
he was helped by many people inside Russia who cannot be named by evident
reasons. The photos of the device were rencently released on Nav List
(yes, this is the same one, with the same number). The device is complete,
with carry-in box and original manual. Outside inspection suggests it is
in working condition. Our experts are preparing to open the device
to see what's inside...
Possibly this is the first N-5 outside of the Iron Curtain:-)
The device could be used for accurate celestial navigation
(up to 0'3) for determining the missile launch position
of a submarine or a surface ship in the epoch
before satellites became available. It can be also used as a backup
when satellites become defunct:-)
Attempts to introduce a similar device in 1961 in the US were
unsuccessfull, because the Congress decided for
a cheaper alternative of developing a navigation satellite system :-)
