Frank, you recommended: "... you could try the old 19th-century standard trick: get down low." In order to use this trick one must first realise that there is a problem with the horizon. In a lot of cases these situations are however absolutely not obvious. The features which I mentioned can give the impression of seeing a clear horizon. I guess that this must be even more the case when being in the open sea without any other references. With the photos one has the advantage of reevaluating a situation in more detail when working in the electronic dark room. When measuring with the sextant you are forced to trust that what you have seen at a given moment was correct. Marcel
