Since I own a Troughton and Simms, I'd love to see a scanned copy of that catalogue. Does it exist anywhere?
Wallaston's accomplishments were much farther reaching than I thought, as I found out after noticing has name in your post. In my specialty his Wallaston Prism polarizes light and squirts out two orthogonally polarized beams at an angle with respect to each other.
BTW, is there a typo in sentence listing prices for various arc metals?
And finally, since the arc on my sextant is NOT tarnished, I wonder if it's platinum.
