By "plane geometry" I assume you mean you are finding the distance between the assumed position and the actual position. This distance is not the intercept. The intercept is the shortest distance from the assumed position in the *direction of the azimuth* of the body to a "line of position". You can be anywhere on the line of position (within reason).
