There is a difference between reading some navigation books (and thinking I understand ) and working some real examples (and getting thoroughly confused). After posting the query I used the sight reduction app mentioned in this thread and when I looked at the plot of the intercept and the position line I realised that the intercept and the assumed - actual line are not the same.
