I blame the Monks of old who were great insomniacs. They used to love sitting up all night on cold stone slabs watching when the various stars rose, or ascended, into the heavens, so they knew when it was time to say their prayers. There must be an etymological connection there somewhere, e.g. time and rising. I could never really follow most explanations of right ascension. Sidereal hour angle was easy. You just filled in the pigeonholes on the form. All you had to remember was to subtract longitude west when converting GHA Aries from the Air Almanac to LHA Aries. Even then there was a hint printed.
Am I correct in thinking RA in degrees plus SHA in degrees = 360degrees, and SHA in hours, minutes, and seconds using the 'Arc to Time' table plus RA = 24hours? E.g. if SHA star is 90degrees, RA star is 18hours, or is it more complicated than that, especially for Sun, Moon, and planets. DaveP
