Thanks Gary, Very interesting about the aircraft useing mag headings. I suppose these days it like a fluxgate ( eletronic mag compass). I guess that makes sense due to the runways being orientated along mag headings?
I am a very big fan of the Astro compass as well as others such as the Abrams. The Astro is so simple to use and can even give the ueser a decent fix if info on the sun or planet are known. ( by reverse engineering the work sheet), as I'm sure all know that use or have used one. Actually I think even today it's a fine tool for navigation, and often used ( at least by me) for mag compass correction, deviation card etc.
