All flight navigation uses magnetic courses and headings (actually compass headings.) His heading display shows his magnetic heading, not true heading. So he is making the conversion from true to magnetic. Easy to make that conversion with the mnemonic TRUE-VIRGINS-MAKE-DULL-COMPANIONS.
