I explained this way back in 2015. It came from an article posted by a woman who had calculated that Fred using the wrong date would cause him to think he was 59 NM farther east than his actual position and would have caused them to turn to the approach LOP 59 NM too soon and then miss the island. In fact, such an date line error would cause the LOP error to be in the opposite direction!! I wrote to her to explain the error in her computations but I never got a response from her. It was clear from her wording that she had been looking at astronomy books since she used R.A. instead of GHA.
